Healthcare is another large buyer, with Queen's, Hawaii Pacific Health and Kaiser Permanente running hospitals and clinics across the islands. The University of Hawaii campuses add education facilities.
On Maui, the resort areas of Kaanapali, Wailea and Kihei sit alongside the commercial center in Kahului, and rebuilding after the 2023 Lahaina fire has added construction and restoration work. Hawaii Island splits between Hilo on the wet east side and the Kona and Kohala resorts on the west. The state had 365 janitorial services establishments in 2023 and 10,390 janitors and cleaners in May 2023, so the pool of competitors on any single island is small.
What changes through the year
Hawaii's visitor calendar has two peaks, winter from December to March and the summer family travel season, and hotel and rental cleaning follows both. Salt air and trade winds deposit grime on windows and outdoor surfaces all year, so exterior and window work is frequent. On Hawaii Island, volcanic haze can settle on surfaces when Kilauea is active. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
